Start with the right fixture height
A pendant or chandelier over a dining table is generally hung so the bottom of the fixture sits roughly 30–36 inches above the tabletop, adjusted for ceiling height, so it illuminates the table without obstructing sightlines across it.
Size the fixture to the table
A fixture that's too small can look lost over a large table, while one that's too large can overwhelm a small table. A general guideline is choosing a fixture roughly one-half to two-thirds the width of the table.

Layer in dimmable light
A single overhead fixture on a dimmer switch gives more flexibility than a fixed-brightness light, letting the same room shift from bright everyday lighting to a softer mood for entertaining.
